Uganda is a small country located in central/eastern
sub-Saharan Africa. The official language of the country is English,
though many people speak various African languages. The average
daily temperature ranges from 75-82 degrees Fahrenheit. The population
is 99% African, 1% other ethnicities.
Some areas to the north pose a risk to foreign
travelers, however, the area which we will be visiting, near the
shores of Lake Victoria, is not dangerous. Uganda was initially
one of the hardest hit amongst African countries in the AIDS epidemic,
but due to an effective governmental effort to halt the spread of
the disease, is now not one of the countries of greatest concern.
However, much devastation remains from the initial explosion of
AIDS infections, including many AIDS orphans.
The literacy rate in Uganda is 62%, and the
average life expectancy is 43 years.
